Kahului's “Dream City” was developed by
A&B in the 1950s and 1960s. This development provided housing for
the Company’s employees of Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar Company, Maui Agricultural Company and Kahului Railroad
(encompassing 28 plantation camps).
The original "Dream City" Master Plan called for 1,000 acres for residential lots, 550 acres for streets, 400 acres of parks and schools, 21 acres for commercial use, and 30 acres for churches, cemeteries, public use.
Today, the Kahului/Wailuku area is home to
over half of Maui’s resident population.
