A&B PROPERTIES, INC. TO BEGIN $6.45 MILLION MAUI MALL RENOVATION
Work to Commence by March 1
KAHULUI – A&B Properties, Inc. is proceeding with a $6.45 million renovation project for its Maui Mall property and has awarded a contract worth $5.8 million to a Maui-based contractor. The renovation will revitalize Maui Mall, first opened in 1972, creating a bright, attractive and pleasant place to shop. Construction is scheduled to begin by March 1 (subject to the issuance of building permits) and will be complete prior to the holiday shopping season, which begins in November. The renovation plans were designed by Honolulu-based firm Kober/ Hansen/Mitchell, which has designed shopping centers both in Hawaii and on the Mainland. A blessing for the project will be held February 18 at 4:30 p.m. at the Mall’s center court.
The initial focus of construction will be a complete re-do of the interior center court of the Mall, to be completed in time for the mid-May opening of the 12-screen Wallace Theatre megaplex. Center court improvements include covered dining areas, a new covered stage, and tropical landscaping. An additional entry to the Mall will be added prior to the May theatre opening for improved access to new and existing parking areas.
The most visible elements of the renovation will be a new, green metal roof; landmark towers at entryways; crossover canopies that provide covered access to all areas of the Mall; and energy-efficient, high-output light fixtures to improve nighttime visibility and enhance the safety of Mall patrons and tenants.
Additional elements of the renovation include ADA access improvements; paving for additional parking and improved vehicular circulation; and considerable parking lot landscaping, to improve the Mall’s appearance.
Maui artist Susan Conway will hand-paint ceramic accent tiles to be used for the interior columns of the Mall. The tiles will reflect illustrations of Iao Valley, Haleakala and the Kahului Harbor, and will be used to designate each of the Mall’s three wings.
The Maui Mall is a 182,000-square-foot community shopping center opened in 1972; it currently has 32 tenants, ten of them original tenants, including anchors Star Market and Longs Drugs. Maui Mall boasts excellent access and a prime location in Kahului, on a 26.4-acre parcel bounded by Kaahumanu Avenue, Lono Avenue, Kamehameha Avenue and Hana Highway.
The contractor, Arita-Poulson General Contracting, is a Maui-based contractor doing work throughout the state; it was established in 1986. Their Maui Mall project manager will be Erick Krenelka and they expect the majority of the subcontractors to be Maui-based.
The Maui Mall is owned and operated by A&B Properties, Inc., the property development and management subsidiary of A&B-Hawaii, Inc. (ABHI). ABHI is a subsidiary of Alexander & Baldwin, Inc., (NASDQ: ALEX), a diversified corporation headquartered in Honolulu. A&B’s other main subsidiary is Matson Navigation Company.
